Dawn Collinson from the Liverpool Echo discovers it’s easy to follow celebrity mums-to-be and ditch maternity wear for catwalk trends this season
PREGNANCY fashion was once all about unflattering tent-like smocks and even worse elasticated waists.
But now a parade of celebrity mums-to-be are leading the way in ditching traditional maternity clothes in favour of catwalk looks.
Peaches Geldof, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Sienna Miller are amongst those whose bumps have been seen gracing the awards season and fashion weeks.
And Amy Keating at Boudoir Boutique in Cavern Walks – who is eight and a half months pregnant herself – says there’s no reason why any expectant mum can’t follow their example.
“A lot of the trends for spring/summer work really well for pregnant women,” says Amy. “There’s lots of 70s-inspired styles, maxi dresses and kaftans which are perfect.”
When Amy first found out she was expecting her first baby, the 22-year-old says she went looking for maternity clothes on the high street.
“But there were all these jeans with big stretchy waistbands which were awful and there was just nothing I liked,” she adds. “I started to get a bump from about eight weeks, so I had to make allowances quite early on. But I was lucky because what I was buying for the shop for spring/summer was really easy to adapt.
“From a couple of months onwards I started wearing more kaftans over leggings, which stretch nicely, and maxi dresses either in loose-fitting fabrics or in jersey which stretches too. Although I like the floaty maxis because they’re really comfortable, they can swamp you so I found it was nice to wear something more fitted sometimes just to show you’ve still got a figure.”
Amy has proudly got right through her pregnancy – the baby is due on March 23 – without adding a single item of maternity wear to her wardrobe.
Although she has had to make a few concessions, she admits. “I’ve had to give up on my leather pants,” she laughs, “and recently the high heels have gone – although I do still wear them on Saturday nights!”
